Surgical Assistants are licensed by the Texas Medical Board and perform many functions in the operating room under the direct supervision of your surgeon to ensure your procedure runs smoothly and efficiently. Licensed Surgical Assistants are unique members of the medical team that are solely trained in and focused on surgical excellence and enhancing patient outcomes. By selecting a Licensed Surgical Assistant to aid in the surgical process, your surgeon has chosen to provide you with an enhanced surgical experience only possible through the collaborative partnership of the medical doctor and the surgical assistant.

The Licensed Surgical Assistant will facilitate the surgical process from the time the operating room is prepared before a procedure, throughout the surgery, and during the postoperative period until you are safely in the post-anesthesia care unit. At all steps of the operating room experience, the Licensed Surgical Assistant will have your safety and surgical outcomes in mind and will be another advocate for you during your procedure.

To become a Licensed Surgical Assistant, one must first train as a Surgical Technologist. They must obtain a college degree, complete an accredited Surgical Assisting program, and log thousands of training hours before being eligible to sit for the National Board Certification necessary for licensure.
